📱 Spot the Squares

You’ve probably seen them everywhere — on cereal boxes, museum walls, posters, even your pizza box! Those black-and-white square patterns are called QR codes, short for Quick Response codes. They look simple, but inside those boxes is a secret — they can hold tons of information that your phone can read instantly.

So, how do these magic squares actually work?

🧩 A Clever Kind of Barcode

QR codes are like super-powered barcodes — the kind you see on products at the supermarket.
A regular barcode stores info in one direction (left to right). But a QR code stores it in two directions — both left-to-right and top-to-bottom. That’s why it can hold so much more data, like website links, text, or even Wi-Fi passwords!

Each little black or white square is like a tiny pixel of information — together they form a digital puzzle your phone can solve.

👀 Step 1: The Phone Spots the Pattern

When you open your camera and point it at a QR code, your phone instantly looks for three big squares in the corners. These are called position markers, and they help the phone figure out where the code starts and ends — kind of like the corners of a map.

Once it spots those, your phone knows the angle and distance of the QR code, even if it’s sideways or wrinkled!

💡 Step 2: Reading the Hidden Data

Next, your phone’s software scans all the tiny squares inside. Each one represents a binary code — a pattern of 1s and 0s, the language computers use.

By combining thousands of these tiny codes, your phone decodes a hidden message — like a website address, event ticket, or menu link.

In just a blink, your phone turns that secret code into something you can see on screen!

🛠️ Step 3: Error Fixers and Mini Art

QR codes are so smart that they can even fix mistakes!
If part of the code is smudged or covered, your phone can still read it, thanks to something called error correction. It’s like having backup pieces of a puzzle in case one gets lost.

That’s why designers can even add logos or colors inside QR codes without breaking them — the code is smart enough to fill in the gaps!

💡 What We Can Learn

QR codes are proof that technology doesn’t have to be big to be powerful.
They show how patterns, math, and creativity can work together to send information across the world — in just one tap.

So next time you scan a QR code, remember: you’re not just opening a link — you’re unlocking a secret language of squares! 🔲
